About Ben
Ben McKinlay is a Brisbane-based session guitarist and tutor with an extensive musical background. He has qualifications in songwriting and performance with a Bachelor of Music Performance (Guitar) and an unparalleled passion for inspiring new guitarists to pursue their musical goals. Ben’s musical efforts have led him to play at festivals like the Airlie Beach Music Festival, Byron Bay Bluesfest, Yeppoon Music Festival, and Longreach Festival of Music. As a session musician and live performer, he has rocked many local Brisbane and Gold Coast venues in both full band settings and other accompaniment projects.
Ben’s teaching experience is extensive with over 3 years spent as a dedicated guitar tutor and mentor. In that time Ben has taught students from ages 7 to 55, all of which have come to realise that learning guitar isn’t the difficult part, knowing HOW to learn guitar or where to start is where many beginner guitarists fail. Because of this, Ben’s teaching methodology ensures that from the beginning you are set up with a solid foundation of musical understanding to equip you with the tools that you need to master the guitar yourself - leading to quicker and more tangible results. Under this methodology, Ben follows his ethos; “I don’t just intend to teach, but to inspire,” meaning that every lesson with Ben will lead to a further passion for learning and reinvigorate your want to master the instrument.
Ben’s personal and professional specialty is in blues and rock. Heavily inspired by artists like Gary Moore, AC/DC, and Eric Clapton. While rooted in blues and rock, Ben's love for Indie rock flourishes from years playing it among the Brisbane music scene.
So, for those venturing into the world of guitar for the first time or those who are stuck and are starting to give up hope, investing time with Ben McKinlay is unequivocally the best choice you could make. With him, you'll find a mentor, a guide, and a fellow enthusiast, and an all around exceptional teacher.
